So: should I do front and rear at the same time? If one is worn will the other be as well? I've read that its a tricky job; any hints or tips for
smooth execution?

With 300kmi I'd probably do both.  Tricky?  Seems simple enough to me.
Unbolt, pry off, bolt on new.  You need to collapse the driveshaft to
make clearance to get them out and in.  I use pipe wrenches to loosen
and tighten the nut.
