Max's experience pretty much mirrors mine when I de-catted my '87 300D a
couple of years ago. I bought an assortment of cheap pipe sections and
clamps from FLAPS, but just as Craig points out, the last 10% took 90% of
the work--namely, sealing the gaps between the original metric-sized pipes
and the SAE-sized filler. My solution was basically to fill the gaps with
a bead of weld, then wrap a sleeve of scrap sheetmetal around each joint
thus sealed and weld it all around the edges to provide reinforcement. The
end result was very ugly, but it has held up just fine for going on two
years now.
