Mine probably does too.
I have no real means of comparison as I am the only one I know of locally who owns one of these old cars. I had a friend with a similar vintage 240D and my recollection of it is that it was quieter than my car.

So what is the likely reason for a diesel being noisy?
I think I have been told it would might help to check the adjustment on the valves.
