I think that really shorts the TDI too, the 2012 is rated for 42 highway which is most of what I drive.
The new EPA estimates are crazy low, my '84 190D 2.2l auto is EPA rated 27/31, I average about 38 with runs up to 40. The '98 TDI was rated 33/44.
