My impression of the founders back when the site started was that they were very progressive politically. They carefully presented all the facts they could verify, then interpreted them with a leftward slant. So the political chain mails from the left side would be "True", while a similarly factual political chain mail from the right side would be "True (but it doesn't mean as much as the sender claims it does)".
