I need to replace a rear wheel bearing on my 300D. Everyone keeps

As far as I know, a dial indicator is only necessary to set FRONT wheel
bearings. Some proprietary tools are required (or at least desirable)
for installing rear wheel bearings, but what tools depend on which year
and model 300D you are discussing.

My mistake, a dial indicator is indeed needed to set end play (not
needed on 201/124 chassis rear wheel bearings). It is measuring
0.04-0.06 mm (0.0016-0024") so something with marks every 0.001" (and
you can estimate half that) will work fine. One of the $10-20 Chinese
dial indicators will be FINE.
See 35-130/9 on the 123 CD.
