the ate or pentosin DOT 4 stuff is like 11 or 12 bucks a liter retail.
y'know, like the stuff in the blue can. clearly marked dot 4

Valvoline used to use the Synpower name on DOT 4 fluid in a silver bottle.
Could get it at the grocery store (Meijer) for $5.99 a qt.
Then a few years ago the Synpower disappeared, and synthetic 3/4 in a white bottle replaced it, with a lower boiling point than an old bottle of Synpower I compared it to. I put the new Valvoline in my Olds and my dad's Dodge without trouble, but I miss the old Synpower. Back in the 1980s, I only used Castrol Low Moisture Activity DOT4, but have been avoiding that brand since they went to court in the 1990s to assert their right to call part synthetic oil 'full synthetic'.

If you want to be sure you're doing the best you can do, get a liter of ATE Superblue racing fluid, a liter of the corresponding ATE gold stuff, and alternate annually.

I bought a liter (in a steel can, fortunately) about ten years ago but never opened it. I don't do annual fluid changes, and so far it's been obvious when the old fluid turned to new while bleeding, without using the blue dyed fluid.

Mitch.
