"Congress shall not pass any law establishing a state religion"

The Constitution was set up to protect the PEOPLE from the establishment of a state religion like the Church of England. The United States is a completely secular nation, we do not use religion as part of our government. Period.

This part of the Constitution is very often deliberately mis-read and mis-interpreted in order to do exactly the opposite, i.e. to give certain "religions" State approval and/or executive power, quite contrary to the intentions of the Founding Fathers. They were very definitely Rationalists, firmly (and correctly) believing that humans are quite capable of running their own government without the intervention of Supernatural Beings.
