I can't clear codes on my 97 SL500 without one of these things. Looks like they
can be bought fairly cheap from China, but who knows who is a reputable
supplier on Alibaba??
This is the setup with the multiplexer, a bunch of different cables for the
different cars, and a hard drive with the software or a computer with it
already loaded.

Friendly local stealership? Have you looked on fleabay? A lot of chinee
sellers on there, mostly with stuff shipped from Hong kong, like
cellphoneshop.net.
