His wouldn't start, the computer wouldn't run the motor if the battery
reported a malfunction.  There might be a workaround, but he is a smart guy
(although, not mechanical) and didn't find anything he thought was likely
to work reliably.  He begged the Honda people to let him just replace the
battery but they insisted battery and controller were matched.  At that
point they knew he wasn't going to buy the whole package so they weren't
just insisting to make more money - they'd have done better to let him try
it!

I did offer to help him rebuild the battery packs to see if that helped.
