The friend was invited to a wedding to be held at that resort place at
Yeehaw Junction which is not in Maine.
Goober == redneck == low-rent, trailer trash, etc. -- you know, all
those stereotypes.
The appalled aspect probably relates to her being a liberal NY person of
Jewish heritage living in Flahduh who finds interacting with "those
people" outside the liberal enclaves to be somewhat challenging. She
did say however that the venue offered skeet shooting, which involves
guns, so maybe she is not too xenophobic with regards to the finer
elements of redneckdom.
