Most people in any kind of shape can out split a log splitter on speed for 
relatively small rounds. The only time a splitter is worth having is if you're 
going to do a large amount of wood in just a few days. If you're willing to 
split your wood over the whole summer a few rounds at a time a splitter is a 
waste of money.

I've got a little person powered hydraulic splitter. Its basically a bottle 
jack on a log splitter. I use it to get big rounds started, then finish quick 
with the axe. If the wood is relatively straight the axe is way faster.

Andrew, you need to try out a hydraulic splitter.

My father built one many years back and it is not pretty but boy can it 
ever split wood.
I am no purist when it comes to work of that nature.
