This sounds exactly like the issues my brother had when he had an early 2000s 
Passat.  Apparently they were known to have window regulators fail, which would 
cause the window to drop down and he only way to keep it in place was with 
rubber wedges.

He had several replaced, and every time it happened there wasn't a regulator to 
be had in the US and often not even in Germany.  I know at least one time he 
had to wait almost two months before they got one.

Thank goodness for MB and their wonderful parts distribution system!
