The connection is the same as an OBD-II reader and it can perform all the OBD-II functions plus a bunch more things. Your Passat requires the more expensive cable but it can do a lot more than my car can handle. For instance if you had different size tires it can correct the speedo. Theres a limit but I think its around 10% change...
