The sealant at each end of the slot where the seal goes is what keeps it from leaking oil -- it almost never actually leaks under or over the seal, but the corner dribbles.

Serious design issue, there does not appear to be a sealant that does not eventually leak. Semi-hardening ones are the best, but they still only last 30,000 miles or so, or for me, every couple years.
