So, how did MB change it after 74? The AC system in my 76 is pretty basic.
I wouldn't have thought they would have changed anything much before they went from the 115 to the 123 models?

Any ideas?

W114/115 -- the damper flap that switches from heat to AC has a change-over switch on it 
that switches the fan control over between the AC blower and the heater blower.  If this 
servo (vacuum operated) leaks, or the switch fails -- very common, by the way -- the 
switch-over can get stuck between the two positions with neither fan blowing.  The servo 
is long unavailable (not used since 1974) but you can "cheat" and simply wedge 
the blower switch (and the damper) in the correct position manually.

Otherwise, it's the blower switch or the motor, and the motor is pure hell to 
replace.  On that car, you have to remove the evaporator.
