I think this is what was wrong with my '85 190D also, it wandered slightly at speed and was no fun to drive because of it. I first noticed it headed home after one of the ChowdaQs, we were on an offramp of the highway, I heard and audible "pop" and the rear felt weird. With a manual trans I didn't notice the torquing at shifts like I did with the slushbox.
