Check out the Tested channel on Youtube and watch Will and Norm assemble a 
Printrbot. A sub $500 3d printer although it only works in PLA, you'd probably 
want ABS for this application.

I'm seriously debating one...

With that I would agree.  Now we just need to get one....

I was reading an article on Hack A Day or MAKE, someplace like that, and they 
said that prices are really coming down on 3D printers.

I have a friend who is retired military, that was recently visiting his 
daughter and her husband at Lackland AFB, I believe (somewhere in TX.)

He had some sort of dental emergency that required a crown or repair to a 
tooth.  The replacement was made right there with some sort of medical grade 3D 
printer.  That certainly makes sense for a 3D printer application.
