As independent energy sources, the sun, wind and geothermal heat represent
some of the most promising solutions for generating carbon-free electricity.

This shows a bias, and a lack of understanding of the real world. Carbon is an element. It occurs naturally. For those inside the beltway, that means that carbon occurs in nature.

Carbon and oxygen are necessary, along with water and minerals for plants to survive. Without CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) plants will die. Without CO2 there will be no plants for tasty animals to eat to provide food for higher mammals.

I doubt there is a solar, wind or geothermal (or Hydro) electric power generating system in place that is made without carbon.
