Some might not agree with me, but I've never liked the W210. I think they ride really poorly... much more like a Japanese car than a Mercedes. My father owned two which I drove quite a bit... a 98 E300td and a 99 E320 wagon.
That said, for the money, they're good cars if someone just needs something reliable, safe, and modern. A later E320 is a great buy right now. I can't comment on the AMG variant... I have no idea. The W211, btw, was a huge improvement in ride and restore my faith in these cars.
