Admiral Yamamoto was quite a guy. He didn't want war with the USA,
but did what he saw as his duty and wiped out Pearl Harbor. Then he
said: "I fear all we have done is wake a sleeping giant." He had it
right. A transport he was on was shot down by a p-38 and he was
killed. The story was in RD about 1968 or 70, titled "I shot down
Yamamoto."
