Redline has been 5000 RPM from OM621 through OM603 (1958 to roughly 2000) Yellow line 4500

Unlike most gassers, the MB diesels can go all day at redline. That is typically how the 4 cylinders are driven.

When I had a chovey, the redline was 4500. I don't know about current deetriot iron, but i think the dogde v6 is still around 4500 redline.

My understanding is that these diesels don't have the
same revs==gas that most cars do. Perhaps they were
after a quieter highway ride, not fuel economy? Would
still need a higher stall speed TC to make up for the
loss of off-the-line acceleration. But that would also
make it less efficient under load, so who knows...
