No idea if this applies to MB but it likely could not hurt.
My mechanic son Tom, spent the weekend swapping a transmission for a
friend in a 2000 Nissan Maxma.
The existing transmission still moved the car but would not go into the
higher gears.
They had a couple of options. Have the original rebuilt or find a used
one to throw into it.
They chose the latter and found a used one from a junk yard for a
fraction of the price of the rebuild.
Tom had his fingers crossed that the transmission would work once it was
installed. The yard that they got it from swore it worked fine before it
was removed from the previous car but it had also been on their shelf
for a long while.
He pulled the old transmission on Saturday and had the replacement in
and most of the car back together by Saturday at supper time.
Sunday, he went back out in the morning to finish it off.
Then he got a surprise. The vehicle would crank but not start.
He checked a bunch of things but had no success in starting it. No codes
came up.
He then went online and read some forums that discussed this. The gist
of what he found there is that one must sand the mating surfaces of the
engine and the transmission to clean the metal and ensure a good ground
between the two. He could not easily do this after it was all installed
without pulling the transmission again so the did the next best thing
and installed a couple of ground wires from the transmission bolts back
to the battery ground.
That seemed to do the trick as the engine then fired up.
He drove it a bit and the transmssion started out a bit questionable,
flaring etc, but seemed to get better after he drove it some, so he
has given the vehicle back to the owners with instructions to drive it
but to try not to abuse it for a bit and see if it improves with time
and use. They did put Mobil1 transmission fluid in it.
He says he did read the instructions on Mitchell before he started the
job and looked at all of the tips they offer but they said nothing about
this issue of grounding.
He says he will never install another transmission without cleaning the
mating surfaces to ensure he does not run into this issue again.
He has also suggested to the vehicle owner that it is a good time to
sell the Maxima.
