A really cheap (crystal) record player cartridge will put out a
line level signal and will EQ it approximately correctly. I
haven't seen crystal cartridges for many years.

So you good turntable almost certainly has a magnetic
cartridge. These put out a mic level signal that also needs
RIAA EQ applied. A "phono preamp" will do this. Old
receivers would have all had a phono input. But in the last
20 years or so most do not.

There are a few turntables with the preamp built in. In the
old days, it was very rare. Now - I don't know. I haven't
really looked.

But from your description, it sure sounds like you need a
phono preamp. The turntable feeds the preamp, the preamp
feeds your receiver. The preamp will get the level up where
you expect it - and apply the needed EQ.
