My 82 300CD is a turbo and has VIN XXXXX00013 so they probably started
production that year.

Turbo starting 1982, ending 1985. Can't remember when the 123 coupe
first came out, but through 1981 the diesel was NA.

We lose power from time to time, usually due to ice storms and almost
never in the warmer months. We have 2 wood stoves, one of which heats
24/7. We also cook on it and in it.
If/when power goes out, we have heat and a place to cook. There is a
balcony just outside our kitchen and dining room, we put perishables in
coolers out there. I live a stone's throw away from a pristine clean
(certified drinking water) 32 mile long lake. Water can be had from
there, many other local lakes or several springs in the area
year-round.
Why does your furnace require so much power? Is it an antique or
something special? All electric, no fuel? We have a 1 1/2 year old oil
fired hot water unit that I installed to replace the junk Utica Boiler
that was installed in 86-87, when the house was built. Neither pulled
much power at all. The new one used 42% less fuel, in its first year of
operation and has a higher output by about 6,000 BTUs.
If you're on electric heat only, I feel for you, as I know some folks
around here that spend way too much to heat their homes. Some in the
$700-$900/month range. Our boiler, installed was less than $2,000 and
it is a very high quality cast iron unit built by Burnham. Of course I
got a discount through a plumber/HVAC buddy and did the lion's share of
the work myself.
