Aerodynamics and fuel economy standards drive a lot of the design and
shape and openings and such. It seems there is not a lot of latitude
for designers when every maker is trying to get low drag. And the Asians
are fairly adept at copying stuff so that their next iterations look a
lot like the next iterations of whatever was copied, or vice-versa.
I saw something a coupla days ago that looked like the older E-class
then when I got closer it was a Lexus or Hyundai or something. It's
like they bought the tooling for the lights and trunk and rear end and
just built their own car.
I am waiting for the new Kia Dymaxion!

If there was one thing about my W220 that’s a negative (in my mind) it’s the
styling. It’s a wonderful car and has all sorts of very nice goodies, very
good to drive, etc., but in a parking lot it looks like every other car. I
think the real distinctive MB design ended with the W140 as a far as sedans go.

I have not kept track of things closely enough so I might be wrong on this but
it appears to me that MB is now copying asian designs.
A few years back it was the other way around. A friend has a nice 2000 Lexus
sedan that on first glance makes me think Mercedes.
Now, when I see a new Mercedes, I think, "Hyundai" until I can see the star.
The new Mercedes do not look "classy" to me.
I do suppose they are trying to appeal to a younger group than me.
