Yes, I always get a big laugh from the "big board" comment, too. The big
board was real, and I have seen it at SAC HQ, at Offutt AFB, NE. I also
understand the significance of it. I'm sure that even I was noted on the
board in some manner many times. Each unit also had its "big board" in the
unit command post.
I also held and studied many times targeting books like the one Scott
clutched to his chest.
BTW, the term heard most from the command post was probably, "Stand by."
Well, that's what we "lovingly" kidded them about, anyway.
Another, if you called in and said, for example, "--- Call sign, mission
complete, back in local area, request landing instructions," response was
always,
"Fly out your time." If you called in and said, for example, "Mission
complete, landing in 10 minutes, request parking, and transport" response
was, "Roger that, parking Bravo 4, transport en rote."

I took Strangelove with a large grain of salt, as my Dad liked to point out
procedural stuff in it that would have never happened. Dad did say that
the bomber crews in WWII often wrote on the bombs with chalk, in many cases
things that were not appropriate for family hour (he was a B-29 flight
engineer in a reconnaissance wing, but was stationed with a bomber group.)
It is one of my favorite movies, more so due to it being a Kubrick film
and the dark humor than anything else. And George C. Scott, who was
revered in my household when I was growing up as the representation of a
"real man".
“But-but-but they’ll see the big board!”

While watching the WGA’s top 7 movie scenes, I wondered:
Did you ever write stuff on the outside of the warheads/bombs like they
did in Dr. Strangelove?
Just curious…
