4 wheel drive is most of the time a waste of gas, snow tires are a wonderful
thing. I'll be putting the snows on the Jetta next week. The Golf came with
nice looking all season tires, I'll give them a shot, if they don't work out
I'll get a set of ugly wheels and put some snows on that too.I usually use
really cheap snow tires and have had really good luck, even cheap snows are
better than most all season tires in the snow and ice. My '98 Jetta was a
disaster with all season tires, with snows it'll go anywhere it can keep the
tires on the ground. I got narrow tires 175 something R14 where my summer tires
are 185 something R14. Most folks run 205 something R14 on them...
Of course last week at camp I ran the 4wd in the Dodge a bunch, found some
really sloppy wet mud that challenged it. That truck is due for tires soon,
it'll get something a little more aggressive this time.

Subject: [MBZ] in praise of 4 wheel drive

We got a taste of winter late yesterday.
A bit white looking around here now.
Only an inch or so but it made for slippery roads. There was a 20 car
pileup on Bishop Grandin Blvd last night.
One would think that people who live in the GWN would remember from year
to year that one must slow down when things turn white and leave a bit
more space between cars.
I have been driving for about 46 winters now and I managed ok.
I went to a funeral for a friend this morning which meant a drive of 30
miles or so in each direction. Took the perimeter highway from the south
side, around the east side to the north side and then took a highway a
few miles north from there. Windy so blowing snow and some snow on the
roadway in spots. Always wonder about the spots without snow - slippery
or not? Got to say that 4 wheel drive is a wonderful thing.
