Heres an odd one:

After looking at it carefully, I figure its a grey market car with swapped
out seats and what appears to be an aftermarket turbo on a NA engine. I've
heard that such kits exist, but have never actually seen one.

Certainly doesn't qualify for "100% original" but is interesting anyway.

Jaime

Before MB came out with the turbodiesels, there were 2 companies making turbo kits for MB in the USA, starting with the 220D. I often thought about putting a turbo on my 200D, but never did because of cost and reliability concerns. Much better to start with an engine designed for turbo.

Three things I always wanted in the 200D: A turbo or an extra cyl; a 5 speed, and a sunroof.

When the 240D and 300D NA came out, the turbo kits were available within a few months. Someplace in the old Star magazines from that period, I would have ads for at least one of the turbo kit companies, and there was at least one review with photos. I don't remember one with this little plumbing to the intake.

In the rear photo, it looks like the rear bumper is yuro, (RTW) which would lend credence to Jaime's theory.
