I think the peak of MB design and engineering straddles the W116 and W126
chassis’.

While I have never owned a W116, and am not terribly excited about their looks,
they are very luxurious cars for the time and well appointed. I would say the
same about W126 cars as well, although they’re a bit more modern without being
that much more complex. I like the W126 design better, too, although there are
those who might describe them as “boxy”.

The W140 is a close second, but it’s really in a class by itself. Driving one
of the W140s around the house then getting in one of the other cars (W220 or
R129) makes the W140 seem so much more refined. They’re tanks, for sure, but
the solid build and classic design makes them very distinctive for their time.
Everyone knows a W140 is a Mercedes, even without a tristar to give it away.
