Heh, thats cheatin. I never used to use the block heater above freezing.
Neither of my VWs has a block heater or shows any sign of needing one.
Supposedly the '99 and later TDIs don't have freeze plugs so theres no where to
even put a block heater. Instead folks install a "Frost Heater" which is an
inline coolant heater. 1500w so it really pumps some heat out. They say its
great because you get instant cabin heat for a few seconds until the coolant
really starts to circulate.
The TDI guys are super paranoid about not starting in the cold, they'll run a
frost heater at 0C "just in case". My '98 Jetta started fine at -16F which is
the coldest we've had since I got it. Supposed to be -13F tonight, we might try
making a cold start video tomorrow.

I use the block heater below 40 degrees, set on a timer. Car fires fine
without it, but I get a smoother idle and heat very quickly. Timer turns on
the block heater about an hour before I leave.
