From there I went to the ViceGrips without success.
Red heat is your very best friend. Reach for it second, next time. (Just before rounding anything off.) I wrecked one once, and used a grinder to trim off the flare, then removed the ruined nut. I replaced the nut and put on a new double flare with the right tool. Problem solved!
