Not many multimeters are able to measure 1-20 amps of current. multimeters measure miliamps. a good meter would trip a breaker or blow a fuse where a cheap multimeter will let the smoke out if you apply even 1 amp.

  An old fashioned car ammeter could do it, but you'd have to wire in inline.

At low draw, the ammeter between ground strap and negative post is more accurate.
