I've heard of people bulging gas tanks heating them with a hairdryer. With diesel you'd have to get the tank really hot before it would put out combustible fumes. Diesel will put out combustible fumes but its over 100 degrees (probably more like 150) before it will happen. The last couple days I've been making our garden into raised beds, I bought some 2x10s for the raising part. To keep them from rotting I use a mixture of pine tar, turpentine and boiled linseed oil. To get the pine tar into solution I boil the whole thing on a camp stove. I'm using an Optimus 8r stove since its the smallest I have and my favorite. To light the stove you preheat with denatured alcohol. The other day I thought I'd be a smarty and put the can of pine tar mix on the stove before the preheat was done and capture some of that heat. Well the preheat wafts up quite high and the next thing you know its ignited the contents of the can! Fortunately I was standing there watching it and I already had gloves on, I whipped the can off the flame and blew on it which put the fire out. A good example of vapors lighting... -Curt
