Kaleb, My best Indies always said the 84 300SD was the best. Something to do with MB trying to "improve" the torque converter in the tranny in the 85 making it worse than the 84. I don't know personally as I've never owned either. But these Indies were mostly spot on about what they told me on my 80 300SD and my 83 300D. Just some extra info.
