I've had the air cleaner off to install a new battery. It's all ok. I'll
start poking around the engine on Saturday....I'm just excited the thing
runs!

I'd look for something loose being shoved around by engine movement.
Exhaust systems, in particular, can cause some really interesting
rattles that are frustrating to track down. So can bad air cleaner
mounts. Maybe even something flapping around in the breeze from the fan.
