I had looked into learning how to service my Seiko myself but all the websites say "buy half a dozen cheap watches to practice on" since they'll get ruined. I figured I'm better off paying somebody... -Curt

It is VERY easy to stick something into the balance spring while attmepting to nudge the lever the very tiny amount it will need to move to speed the watch up 16 sec/day -- the range of the regulator is something like 10 minutes per day. If you poke the hairspring or balance the watch will very likely need a new balance, it's rather unlikely you won't seriously bend up the hairspring or worse break a pivot off the balance. They are usually 0.2 mm in diameter..... Try wearing it at night or standing on edge while not wearing it before you try to remove the back. They are usually VERY tight, you probably won't be able to hold the watch in your hand to remove the back. Check you local jewelers, too -- someone may be able to set the regulator for you with the proper tools (mainly a timing machine) for a minimal fee. Much better than wrecking a perfectly good watch. I won't tell you how many I broke before I learned, still kicking myself about one very nice Elgin 21 jewel I snapped the balance pivots on being stupid.
