The XJ6 was about the simplest and easiest Jag to work on of its vintage. The
worst parts were the climate control. The engine compartment wasn’t bad with
the inline six, giving you pretty decent room to move around and get to stuff.

I had a customer with the first year V12 in the XJ body, an XJ12. Darned thing
had a distributor cap the size of a dinner plate. Six side draft Solex carbs
that had to be balanced every 800-1000 miles or your mileage dropped from
around 8 mpg to around 4 mpg. The saddest thing about that car was the
transmission. It was a cast iron case Ford FMX three speed as I recall.
Gearing was so awful it was out of first gear as soon as the tires began to
rotate.

I will say it was a real pleasure to drive, however. So smooth and quiet that
when you were doing 60 mph it felt like 30. Sucked gas like crazy, though.
That’s why the car had two 16 gallon tanks.
