Somehow I deleted Kaleb's email describing this adventure. But, I did get to read it before deleting. THAT was a great story. I am assuming attempting to drive that whole distance was only successful since it was a diesel. With a gas engine, you would have been stranded much earlier. Either way, great job doing what you could to make it home! Reminds of a story (probably an urban legend) of a guy who broke an alternator belt on an old truck and used some old nylons to make a belt that worked well enough to keep the alternator charging long enough to make it home.
About the closest I ever got to that was to use some duct tape to repair a radiator hose that burst wide open about halfway between Nashville and Springfield, Missouri. I had to stop every 30 minutes or so and add water/antifreeze and a few more layers of tape. But, it made it. EVERYTHING was soaked with coolant and I used two rolls of tape.
