Make Magazine some years ago had a little project called a Joule Thief wherein you made a little circuit (actually just a coupla bits wired up) with an LED and applied it to a dead battery to make the LED come on. It worked! Was kinda fun using some bits I recovered off old circuit boards. I think I still have it in a drawer somewhere, was amusing for a few minutes but I suppose it would be useful in some situations.

There are a bunch of these folks who collect older batteries that would be
failures in a car, but have the ability to procure some voltage. They stock up
on them to make a storage system. They also collect the used AA-D cell and
suck those dry as well. Real Bottom feeding and reduced re-use

I don't know how long Home Depot has been selling these. A battery to fit
Mercedes turbodiesels with 850 CCAs is only $99.00. Way cheaper than the
equivalent Diehard...

Are these any good? They used to be standard issue at the local gas
stations.
