The fuel line from the tank on 603 and 602 engines goes first to the fuel thermostat, then up to a heat exchanger on the head, then back to the fuel thermostat and into the lift pump on the bottom of the injection pump. From there, the fuel goes to the main filter and into the IP.

The fuel thermostat is bolted to the bock under the rear of the injection pump and has four fuel hoses on it. Those hoses are suspect -- they are rather tightly curled down there, and likely are cracked, allowing fuel to leak and and air to leak in. In the winter, if the temp drops suddenly and produces a vacuum on the tank, air gets sucked into the hoses and fills the fuel filter for a while, and it runs like poop until you push it all through the filter and IP. There is no hand pump, so you have to crank it and drive it....

If there is fuel on the hoses, replace them all. You will need pliers to hold the clamps, they will be stuck.

Peter
