Phillip wins the prize - Yes, aluminum flakes off in the long tube from the machine and gets stuck in there. You use a spool gun to eliminate that problem when welding aluminum. That is the reason I chose the MIG machine I did - least expensive with spool gun capability. I have the spool gun, but haven't bought a tank of just argon yet to try it out.
