Well if he only puts it on the outside surface of the pipe away from the front edge. I kind of have a vision of goop smear indiscriminately all over the pipe right over the front cut edge and then jammed into the hose with the stuff getting shoved ahead of the pipe by the edge of the metal. That stuff will come loose. If he can keep it in control and stay way from the front edge it should work.

I gave that some thought, but expected that most of it would be smeared around 
by the patch hose and seal the patch long enough for the replacement hose to 
arrive before the weekend

I don't know if I would have told him to RTV the ends of the pipe. I can see 
too much RTV put on there and then breaking off and getting into the radiator 
with disastrous results to same.
