Dunno, you may be able to buy a new or used motherboard, depending on how popular the machine was. I got a board level repair for $200, but that makes no sense if the laptop was a $300 wally land special pentium when it was new.

Find a computer shop that will replace the machine if they can't return it to you in working condition. Pay em for doing the bios update. It can't cost that much.
