NICE! At least you had the opportunity to learn German. Our area had
lots (probably majority) folks of German descent. There was a German
newspaper until WWI and church services in German until WWi or WWII.
After WWII there was so much anti German sentiment that nobody was
allowed to even ask about German language classes in school.
We could learn latin, or a language derived from latin, or an island
dialect of a language descended from latin.
What German I know (klein) I learned frpm reading the english column,
then the german column, then the english column again in the BMW /2 shop
manual. Some of the english translations were more transliterations.
So after I read the english, I'd try to read the same instruction in
German to figure out what they meant. To this day, I generally can't
get the pronunciation right, but I can read and understand 75% or so of
written German, more if it is in a BMW /2 manual.

Ausgezeichnet.
Seeing that reminds me of Frau Johnson, my high school German teacher.
Every year we would practice and practice and practice that song.
Then, our
German class would go sing for the old Coots in the old folks homes around
town. A vast majority of the old rascals were of German descent. We would
leave them teary-eyed each year.
