I prefer diesel. Temps are ranging a bit over the past few weeks. Some days it makes it to melting point, but the trend has been for -10 to -30 C. Not sure his rad has actually thawed out. The “pop" could have been the prastic neck on the upper hose mount.
Might also be that the biodegradable wire harness has fully failed, and the pop was shorting of all manner of ‘lectric things.
