I agree with Curt. But just in case Andrew wants to continue his
mule-headed ways and throw money at the car:

While he is there, he should have them test the battery and the
alternator. They probably will tell him the battery should be fully
charged before testing ...

Fortunately, changing an alternator in a W123 is MUCH easier than in an
'89 Chevy G20 van.
