A lot of it is that most people have no idea about their car and no idea when they're being taken advantage of. A little information and understanding would make the car process much less expensive for most people. This is one of those strange areas where people seem to revel in their ignorance... -Curt

Taking a car to a garage these days will usually cost close to a $1K even if it is not a major failure. People therefore find it easier to lease or buy a cheap new car and make a monthly payment that never goes away. They essentially rent a car forever but they have reliable transportation and for the most part, known costs.
