A lot of it is that most people have no idea about their car and no idea when 
they're being taken advantage of. A little information and understanding would 
make the car process much less expensive for most people.
This is one of those strange areas where people seem to revel in their 
ignorance...

Maybe, but, cheap cars cause trouble and most people are unable or 
unwilling to do any work on them - especially true of the newer vehicles 
with complicated systems.
Taking a car to a garage these days will usually cost close to a $1K 
even if it is not a major failure.
People therefore find it easier to lease or buy a cheap new car and make 
a monthly payment that never goes away. They essentially rent a car 
forever but they have reliable transportation and for the most part, 
known costs.
