If it's like the latch on my '83 300D and 240D, it could either be a small 
piece of rubber that sticks out, intercepts the door latch, and breaks off 
(look closely for where a piece of rubber has broken off); or the stricker 
could have gotten loose and was pushed back.
Striker must be replaced for broken off rubber, or readjusted and tightened for 
one that's pushed back.
