A bad motor mount can cause this kind of sound. It collapses to a certain height and usually the exhaust will start banging on something. The engine temp dependent and can tap at X rpm and disappear at a higher rpm.

Measure the height of the MMs.

So today I was driving along a 2 lane highway in the 97 and passed a truck.
After I got past him all the sudden I got a loud hammering sound that sounded
like a rod knocking or something. It seemed to happen at lower rpm and went
away when it got up over about 2500 rpm or so. I did not have any low oil
pressure lights or low oil as the oil was just changed and it only will use
about a qt every 5k miles or more. I drove a few more miles and by the time I
got to town t went away as mysteriously as it appeared. Wtf? Maybe a chunk or
carbon broke loose or something?
